How Mary Met Mark: A Daughter’s Interpretation. What’s a mere 3,000 mile commute to star-crossed lovers? Or should I say continent-crossing lovers? Mary, a beautiful, fiery-haired TWA flight attendant based in New York City, decided to get away for a weekend of skiing. And with the fabulous advantage of working in air travel, she hopped a plane and flew to Colorado. Three thousand miles away, Mark, a dashing, mop-headed bachelor living in San Francisco, was invited by his cousin to join him for his band’s gig in Colorado. The day before the trip, Mark’s cousin needed emergency root canal surgery and had to cancel the Colorado gig. Mark, with a plane ticket already in hand, decided not to waste a perfectly good ski weekend. So to Colorado he went. The next day as Mark was executing a graceful turn into the lift line, he saw Mary. Naturally, Mark posed the question every man wishes he could open with, “Single?” (At least as a chair lift rider?) It turns out she was. And Mark, a tall, smiling Jew Fro on skis, was able to convince the gorgeous, redheaded Mary to ski a few runs together. A few runs became a day, and a day became the weekend. However most New York City - San Francisco relationships don’t go too far. Luckily my mother was in the right business and my parents started dating coast to coast, with Mary choosing trips into San Francisco and Mark arranging wonderful dates during her layovers. A few years later, they were married… and, more importantly, I was born.
