Annie & Molly
It all started in 2000 with a glance across the women’s retreat circle. Electricity filled the air as their eyes locked on each other. They were friends first and only saw one another once a year at the retreat. They both had crushes on each other, but had kept it secret. What made the situation even more complicated was that Molly was an “out” lesbian while Annie was married at that time to a man for 24 years. The day finally came where the truth had to come to the surface. Five years had been to much time to hide these mutual feelings.
Finally in 2005, Molly took Annie to the river side to bare her heart not thinking anything would come of it. As Molly was spilling her heart to Annie about the crush she had on her, the air stood still as Annie leaned in and gently placed a kiss on her surprised lips. That was the first of many bubbles that they find themselves in to this day. They parted in a daze to get ready for the evening ceremony of the fire walk. The blaze of the fire shined in their eyes as they crossed the fire, not feeling anything except their hearts pounding with anticipation. They snuck away from the circle and walked down the dark path to their tents. They quietly unzipped the flap of Annie’s tent and sunk down onto the deflated air mattress.
The make out session lasted for hours, feeling like it was their first time they had ever kissed another person. Then Molly left the tent to try and get an hour or two of sleep before the drums started beating for the morning circle. Annie couldn’t sleep, no matter what she tried. About 4am, she got up to go to pee. She had been warned not to put her tent flap so close to the edge of the mountain that faced the river below. But she wanted the view when she woke in the morning. As she took a step into the pitch black, all she felt was air under her feet. She realized in that split second that she had fallen off the cliff. She flipped her body and dug her nails into the soaked earthy hillside, her facing slamming into the mud. As she hung there, her eyes were level with the dirt, she called out in a loud whisper, Molly, Molly. Because Molly’s skin was on fire, she heard Annie’s whisper and came running down the pathway to pull her up to the safety of the level ground. They laughed at the site of her muddy pj’s and face. After Molly took a washcloth and tenderly wiped the mud off of Annie, they took each others hand and walked back into the tent, together, forever.
