Want an “A” Little Girl?!
Cindy and I met in 1984, 26 short years ago. At the time, we were both working at the same high-tech company. Cindy was a Marketing Programs specialist, and I was a technical sales and marketing instructor.
On this particularly sunny and beautiful day, (actually it was overcast and drizzling) I was giving a technology introduction presentation to an audience of about 100. As I walked to the podium to begin my presentation I glanced through the audience, making eye contact with the cutest girl I had seen in any of my classes. I literally did a double take, nearly stumbling in the process. She just smiled and blushed. I proceeded with my presentation, all the while looking towards her trying to get a glimpse of her whenever I could, without being too obvious. After my presentation, I had to leave, as another speaker came up to give his presentation, so I was not able to meet her. I was bummed the rest of the day. I was sure my opportunity to meet her had passed, even though we worked for the same company.
About three weeks later, a weeklong class I was giving was about ready to begin. It was a small class, about nine students. All the students were present (all guys), except for one. After waiting the courtesy ten minutes, I decided to start. I introduced myself and began to address the class. Just as I started speaking, there was a knock at the door. My heart stopped as the door opened and I saw that it was the girl from the introductory class. I could not believe this was happening. I thought she truly must have had the wrong class, but she didn’t. I greeted her, introduced myself and showed her to her seat. I smiled ear-to-ear as I walked back to the podium, to the point of it hurting. I calmed myself and proceeded with the class.
Cindy was cuter and more beautiful than I ever imagined. She had a fabulous sense of humor, and was a complete delight. It took all of one day to fall madly in love with her. However, being the consummate professional, I had to keep my cool, but cool I was not. Fortunately, she thought I was adorable, as I blushed my way around her. It seemed that I could do no wrong, no matter how geeky and stupid I was. Case in point, I took the class out for lunch to celebrate their completion of the course. We went to a local Chinese restaurant where we enjoyed a family style lunch. Seated next to me – of course, Cindy leaned over to me inquiring about the dishes before us. In particular, she asked me “where the head was”, referring to the fish’s head. Thinking she was asking where the bathroom was (because all women use the military term “Head” , right), I replied that it was down the hall and to the right. She looked puzzled at first, and then started to laugh aloud. Though I was totally embarrassed, I too began laugh. Luckily, for me she thought it was all very cute.
I am happy to report that after 24 years of marriage, Cindy and I are still quite smitten, in love with one another and still laughing aloud. And yes, Cindy got an “A” in my class, after much private tutoring.
