Jennifer & Paul
It was early November, 2009…
I don’t know that I’ve told her this, but for a moment I wasn’t going to let her sit down. It was the annual bash for a local cycling club. Jennifer and her friend approached the sofa looking for a seat, just as two guys I’d been trying to talk to got up to get food. For some stupid reason, I was in two minds about inviting her and her friend to sit down, then the guy in the adjacent chair actually did it for me (did he realize he carried the bow?).
Anyway, the three of us chatted about this and that, and I was struck by her shining eyes and a willingness to express an opinion - she’s no shrinking violet. But way before I was ready, she got up to leave (the speeches were about to begin…) And as she stood up, she gave me a look. Cupid in the next seat must’ve fired his arrow then, because that look went straight to my heart. It just left me reeling. The room seemed to go quiet and all I could hear was my heart thumping in my chest. But there was a sinking feeling as I watched her start to walk out of my life, just as smoothly as she has walked in less than an hour earlier.
Ater what felt like an eternity I came to my senses and went after her, catching her just before she got to her car. I invited her to a morning bike ride, which thankfully she accepted. So that was our first date.
Getting to the first date was one thing, but staying there could have been another matter altogether! During our conversation on the sofa, I’d mentioned feeling overweight, and I hadn’t told her I was once a pro bicycle racer. Well, when she showed up for our ride, I noticed she’d brought an ipod with her. Evidently she thought she might be leaving me behind on the hills, and was preparing herself for some solo miles!
That’s how we first met.
