We met in front of the Los Gatos Community Center. We were both attending a meeting of an anonymous group to which we both belong. I was out front smoking a cigarette with three of my friends, and up walked Jill with her friend, Lynn, whom I had previously met. Lynn introduced Jill to us, and my friends were practically pushing each other out of the way to make her acquaintance. I felt out of place.

My friends were 10 years younger than I was, and Jill and Lynn were even younger than them. So when the time came that I was introduced to Jill, I just gave her a head nod and didn’t even say a word. After the meeting, we went to grab a bite, and then we headed to the pool hall. My friends were really into the girls, and I admit that I thought Jill was gorgeous, but I was so sure that she would want nothing to do with me because of our age difference.
During the next few months, we all hung out as a group at coffee shops, having breakfast at 2 a.m., at the pool hall, watching late-night movies… During this time, Jill and I dated other people, nothing serious, but we always ended up hanging out in the same group. Then one night at one of our 2 a.m. breakfasts, Jason (our future real estate agent) made a statement: “a guy knows the minute he sees a girl whether he would or would not…” well, you know. Then he asked Jill, “what about you? Do you know the minute you see a guy?” And Jill replied, “Yes.” Then Jason asked Jill, “what did you think when you saw Pat?” Right then I wanted to get up and leave, but I was trapped in the booth. I didn’t want to know the answer to that question. Then Jill leaned over to me and asked if I wanted to know what she thought because the answer was “Yes.” I was blown away! I didn’t feel out of place anymore, but I definitely did not know what to do with that information.
A few weeks had passed, and we were all at an open-mic night in downtown San Jose. I had gone there with a friend of mine, but I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to leave. Since my friend wasn’t ready to leave, Jill offered to give me a ride home, but I had to drive her car. When we got to my house, she asked if she could use the restroom. I said of course, and we went into the house. When Jill came out of the bathroom, Jill sat on the bed and we started talking. We had always talked and told each other stories about ourselves. Jill was very flirtatious this particular evening, and we started wrestling. I ended up pinning her down and saying “Stop! Just stop.” Then I kissed her. Jill left in the morning, and neither one of us believed that our relationship had changed. We were just closer now.
Time passed, we dated other people, nothing serious. And then came James. James had just moved here from Colorado, and any time James was around, Jill was around. They started dating, and it became serious. Days would go by that Jill and I wouldn’t talk. I realized that I was way more attached to Jill than I had thought.
Christmas was coming up, and Jill came to my house and told me I needed to get a Christmas tree. She was so happy, and I was happy to see her, and I wanted to be happy for her. We went and got a Christmas tree for the house, and then James called. I asked Jill if he wanted to come over. He didn’t.
New Years came, and James decided that he was going to go to the Coast Guard. Basic training would start in a few weeks, and he would be gone for 8 weeks. Jill was still hopeful that their relationship would continue, and James left the door open by stating that he could be stationed in Monterey.
Jill and I were like peas and carrots again during those 8 weeks. We hung out all of the time, nothing inappropriate. James ended up getting stationed in Hawaii, and Jill went out to visit him. She called me from a restaurant she was at with James like two days after she had gotten to Hawaii. She said that everything was wonderful. Two days later, she called me again. She said that everything was still wonderful, but we had a lot to talk about. I went into the garage at Jason’s house, and he asked who had called. I told him it was Jill calling from Hawaii, and he asked how she was doing. I said, “everything is great, but she said something funny. That we have a lot to talk about.” Jason said, “like what? She has realized that all this time she has been in love with you?” I said “NO!”
Two days later, Jill called from the airport crying. She told me all about how horrible her trip had actually been. She came straight to my house from the Oakland airport, and we stayed up all night talking.
From that point on, we were always together. People even thought that we were dating when we really weren’t. They’d say, “you two make such a cute couple,” or they’d ask where my girlfriend was if I was alone.
A month later, I was taking care of a bed-ridden friend during the nights, and Jill would stay at my house with friends until I got home. One night before I left to take care of my friend, Jill tackled me onto a mattress that was behind my couch. I kissed her. That was almost 7 years ago, and we are getting married this coming June. We’ve been like peas and carrots ever since.
