Ricky & Tina
Ricky and I met 1 year ago - on Valentine’s Day.
We connected on a dating website, and my first thought was – why is he interested in me?? He’s a tall, country music lovin’, snowboarding, four-wheel-drive-truck type of guy. I’m short, like hip hop, drive a gas-friendly car, and detest cold weather and snow!
Luckily after talking during the week before V-day, we found out that we had many things in common. By mid-week we were looking forward to meeting each other in person, but our weekend schedules were both busy for the next 3 weeks. So basically due to a schedule conflict, we decided to let Cupid have a freebie shot at us and get to know each other on February 14 - just like any other day. No pressure…
For the few days leading up to Saturday, we planned our first date over the phone, tossing around fun, low-pressure ideas for two strangers with potential. We never really decided, but only knew that we wanted to eat lots of good pizza, and head to the City for some entertainment – anything not too suggestive of romance or love since we were still getting to know each other. We had no idea what our night would turn out to be, but most of all, tried to deny the fact that it was V-day. Needless to say, I was already nervous enough thinking about walking around with a total stranger all day with couples beaming and hearts flashing all around us!
Thinking ahead, though, I bought him some candy Sweethearts as a bold little “I think you’re neat” gift in case he turned out to be a keeper. And on Saturday when he came to pick me up, he greeted me with a red box of chocolates and a smile! I melted, and gave him the box of Sweethearts before we even got in the car.
I imagine we both just stood there in front of my house smiling like little kids with crushes and feeling excited and nervous, but mostly excited. We probably said some words, but I don’t remember what they were… to tell you the truth, I think we were too busy checking each other out, making sure we were the same people as in the pictures online.
Fortunately, we had plans to move our excited selves to Pizza My Heart and, while waiting in slowly moving lines for the Bay Street parking lot, started dancing to rap music in his car. I found out that he could make his same “dance moves” work for both country songs AND for gangster rap songs – and for no good reason other than that, I immediately liked him more.
After traffic, pizza, and a fun photo booth session, we miraculously found free parking in SF (!!) before a musical show that my friend/coworker was starring in. I prided myself in finding a light, funny, and couple-themed show that would not give us any ideas of fast-forwarding the relationship. Au contraire. To my surprise, the show turned out to be, er, raunchy and suggestive, and for most of the show I felt awkward for suggesting that we start off our slow-and-steady relationship with almost 3 hours of sex on stage, starring my male coworker. You can imagine the thoughts going through my head…!
Despite my embarrassment, we enjoyed the time together and even started holding hands during the show. He was a great sport Since I had given him the Sweethearts box to munch on earlier, he was so hungry after the show that he ate the whole box and decided to stop by the nearest restaurant before saying goodnight. We spent the rest of the night talking, eating, and smiling ear to ear before he stole a kiss goodnight, and he dropped me off. To this day, we have been inseparable ever since, thanks to taking chances on an unexpected and fruitful Valentine’s Day date!
This month we’re looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day AND our one year anniversary, but… he doesn’t know I’m submitting our story. In fact, he doesn’t even know that we’re coming to the show (it’s a surprise that I’m revealing on the day of the show). But since we love sharing our Valentine’s Day story of how we first met, I hope you all enjoy reading!

Tina - Each day I thank our Dear Lord that he has brought you and Ricky together. He is quite the remarkable son and deserves a remarkable woman. I believe in my heart he has found that remarkable woman in You! You never hesitate to jump in where needed. Since the day our family met you, you have never seemed like a new addition to the family, but one who has been with us for a long time. I am so very thankful that God has brought the two of you together and You have given your lives to Christ and I see great things happening in your life. Please everyone, vote for my son (Rick)and Tina. In this day and age with all of the negativity this is truly a wholesome, Christian couple who deserve all that life has to offer. I read the story to Bill and we both cried. It was really touching. Love you both so very very much.
